Thermal Applications

Thermal Energy for Industrial Applications and Local Networks

Thermal energy is generated through the controlled pyrolysis process of biomass, carried out at temperatures of approximately 600–900°C in the reactor’s reaction zone, in the absence of oxygen.
The resulting process gases (syngas) are utilized to sustain the thermal regime of the installation and to recover energy in the form of usable heat.

Heat is transferred through dedicated heat exchangers and can be delivered in the form of:

Hot water (70–95°C)

Superheated water (110–150°C)

Process steam

Hot process air

Depending on the project configuration and installed capacity, thermal energy can be used for:

R

Industrial processes (drying, process heating, agro-industrial applications)

R

Heating of industrial or commercial buildings

R

Supply of local district heating networks, including residential consumption

Technical Note: The temperature range of 600–900°C refers to the reactor’s reaction zone. The energy delivered to consumers has controlled temperatures, adapted to the specific application (e.g. hot water or steam), through the use of heat exchangers.

Electrical Applications

Local Electricity Generation

Thermal energy generated through the pyrolysis process can be converted into electrical energy by integrating an ORC module (Organic Rankine Cycle) or an equivalent thermoelectric conversion system.

The conversion takes place through a closed thermodynamic cycle that drives an electrical generator.

The generated electricity can be:

R

Used for internal industrial consumption

R

Integrated into a local microgrid

R

Fed into the electrical grid, in accordance with applicable regulations

R

Stored in battery systems, depending on the project configuration

Technical Note: The reactor produces thermal energy, not electrical energy directly. Conversion into electricity requires a dedicated system (e.g. ORC module) and an electrical generator.

Energy Conversion Process

Biomass is fed into a pyrolysis reactor, where it is subjected to a controlled thermochemical conversion process in an oxygen-free environment.

At high temperatures (approximately 600–900°C), the organic material is transformed into:

  • Biochar (stable carbon form)
  • Process gases (syngas)
  • Condensable volatile compounds

After the start-up phase, the system utilizes internally generated process gases to maintain the reactor’s thermal regime, significantly reducing the demand for external energy input during operation.

Process gases are treated and valorized for:

  • Generation of thermal energy
  • Supply of an electrical conversion system (e.g. ORC module)
  • Supply of an electrical conversion system (e.g. ORC module)

Technical note: Energy self-sustaining refers to the use of internally generated process gases to maintain the reactor operating temperature after start-up. This concept does not imply full energy independence of the installation, but rather a significant reduction and optimization of external energy consumption.
