Frequently Asked Questions
Technical clarifications about pyrolysis technology, biochar, and industrial implementation in Romania.
Technology & Operation
What is a modular biochar plant and how does it work?
A modular biochar plant is a next-generation pyrolysis unit that converts local biomass (agricultural residues, wood, sludge, organic waste) into biochar, renewable energy, and sequestered carbon.
The installations operate 24/7, are fully automated, and do not require special construction.
What types of waste can these installations process?
The units can process up to 63 types of biomass, including:
- plant residues (straw, vines, stems, husks)
- forestry residues
- dried sludge
- dried / digested manure
- residues from the food industry
- wood chips
How long does it take to install a plant?
A modular unit can be installed in 1–3 days, as it is delivered in a fully equipped industrial container, ready for operation.
In practice, you have a functional plant in less than a week.
How much space is required?
A standard unit requires approximately 150–250 m², depending on the biomass flow and location. No special foundations or buildings are required.
Is specialized personnel required?
No. The system is fully automated and requires 1 operator who can be quickly trained.
Pure Carbon Solution provides training and ongoing support.
Is the technology safe? Does it pollute?
The installations operate at controlled temperatures, with extremely low emissions, compliant with European standards.
All gases are recirculated and reused in the process.
It does not produce smoke, odors, or toxic pollutants.
What capacity does a modular plant have?
A standard unit processes ~2,700 tonnes/year of biomass and produces:
- ~600 t/year biochar
- ~4,500 MWh thermal energy
- ~5,000+ tonnes of CO₂ sequestered and avoided
What is the energy efficiency of the installation?
Approximately 70% of the energy contained in biomass is recovered as reusable heat.
It is one of the most efficient systems for energy valorization of organic waste.
Can the plant operate only for energy, without producing biochar?
Technically, no. The pyrolysis process always produces biochar — this is the advantage:
- you get renewable energy,
- you get a valuable physical product,
- you get carbon sequestration → carbon credits.
Thermal & Electrical Energy
Does the plant produce electricity?
Standard units produce thermal energy (hot water / hot air) with very high efficiency.
Electricity can be generated by integrating an additional module (ORC/turbine/generator), where the thermal flow justifies the investment.
How much thermal energy does a biochar plant produce?
A modular installation can generate over 4,000–5,000 MWh/year of thermal energy, usable for:
- heating public buildings (schools, town halls, clinics)
- industrial halls / logistics spaces
- agricultural dryers
- greenhouses / solariums
- domestic hot water production
Can we use thermal energy to heat a city?
Yes. The produced heat can be connected to:
- local district heating networks
- thermal points
- thermal micro-grids
- standalone heating systems
It is ideal for municipalities aiming to reduce gas costs.
How much does the produced thermal energy cost?
The cost depends on the biomass used, but in most cases it is significantly lower than natural gas.
For municipalities, it can generate savings of up to 40–60% on heating.
Can the plant provide hot water for public institutions?
Yes. The installations can supply:
- domestic hot water
- thermal agent
- recirculated water for radiators / underfloor heating
It is an excellent solution for schools, kindergartens, cultural centers, sports halls, etc.
Can the produced electricity be fed into the grid?
Only if the electricity generation module is installed.
In general, the recommendation is:
- thermal use for self-consumption (efficient and simple)
- electricity where there are constant consumers (industrial halls, large farms)
Can we use the energy for agricultural dryers?
Yes. It is one of the most efficient applications:
- grain drying
- medicinal plant drying
- wood drying
- fruit and vegetable drying
Can we supply greenhouses or solariums with thermal energy?
Yes. Many municipalities and farms use biochar + thermal energy for:
- greenhouse heating
- extending the growing season
- reducing costs for gas / pellets
Biochar & Agriculture
What benefits does biochar bring in agriculture?
- improves soil fertility
- increases water retention
- reduces the need for fertilizers
- stabilizes nutrients
- reduces N₂O emissions
- improves soil structure in the long term
What is carbon sequestration and how does it generate profit?
Biochar stores carbon in the soil for hundreds to thousands of years.
This process generates carbon credits, which can be traded on international markets — an additional revenue stream for businesses and authorities.
Investment & Profitability
What are the benefits of a biochar plant?
- reducing waste management costs
- transforming local waste into resources
- generating revenue from biochar and carbon credits
- contributing to local climate neutrality
- fast implementation, without construction works
- safe, automated operation with dMRV monitoring
What revenues can a biochar plant generate?
Revenues can come from:
- selling biochar to agriculture, horticulture, industry
- selling renewable thermal energy
- selling carbon credits
- significant savings by reducing waste storage and transport costs
Can it operate with private funding?
Yes, the projects are profitable for:
- investors
- private companies
- farms
- associations
- local authorities
Due to multiple revenue streams, the investment payback is attractive.
Can it be financed through European funds?
Yes. The technology fits into:
- circular economy
- waste management
- renewable energy
- emissions reduction
- environmental and agricultural programs
